What are my options through the army?

The U.S. Army offers two basic options for military service: Active Army and Army Reserve. You can choose the option that fits your particular needs, including the opportunity for a college education, as well as hands-on experience.

ARMY (full time soldier)

As a full-time Soldier, you’ll acquire knowledge and develop skills in one of more than 150 specialized career fields. To enlist, you must be between 17 and 34 years of age. Once you are qualified, you could receive medical, dental, housing, retirement benefits, and:

• Up to $85,536 for college
• Up to 100 percent tuition assistance with a maximum benefit of up to $4,500 per year

ARMY RESERVE

To join the Army Reserves, you must be between 17 and 34 years of age. Once qualified, you’ll receive training in one of more than 120 specialized careers, serving part-time near your home. In the Army Reserves, you'll get excellent benefits, plus:

• Up to $24,732 for college
• Up to 100 percent tuition assistance

Options to pay for college once you join the Army include:

MONTGOMERY GI BILL AND POST 9-11 GI BILL

Since 1944, the Montgomery GI Bill has helped qualifying veterans and active duty Soldiers pay for college and training. The Post 9-11 GI Bill continues this tradition, as well as allowing you to pass along benefits to qualifying family members.

COLLEGE LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM

If you qualify to serve in the Army, you’ll be able to repay college loans that you may have acquired previously using the college loan repayment program.

MEDICAL AND DENTAL

As a Soldier, you receive medical and dental care. Army Reserve Soldiers are also eligible under certain circumstances.

ENLISTMENT BONUS

Once you’ve enlisted, you could receive an enlistment bonus of up to $40,000. If you decide to be part of the Army Reserve, you can receive up to $20,000, depending on the specialized training you’re qualified for.

VACATION

Active duty Soldiers earn 30-days of vacation per year. Army Reserve Soldiers are also eligible under certain circumstances.
